International Children’s Day in classified as a public holiday in Cambodia, and the demographics of the country makes the holiday an important one. Cambodia’s population is the youngest in Southeast Asia, with 66 percent of the population younger than 30 years old. This year marks the 64th anniversary of the holiday

Statistics compiled by UNICEF highlights the many challenges facing children in Cambodia. According to the most recent statistics, 19 percent of children less than five years old are underweight. For the poorest children, 35 percent are underweight. Many children throughout the country end up working rather than going to school to their family’s poverty.
